Micro-needling is a technique that helps the body to create new elastin and collagen by making little wounds in the skin to stimulate an immune system response. Because it uses the body’s own healing abilities it is safe to use on people with any skin color or skin type.

What is Micro-Needling?

This technique creates thousands of tiny microscopic pinpricks in the skin to stimulate the healing process much like when you get a tattoo. The white blood cells react when an injury occurs to fight infection and new layers of collagen and elastin are formed in the layers of the skin which helps restore firmness and smoothness. This filling and lifting process smoothes out wrinkles making them disappear over time.

The MicroPen makes this process practically painless while simultaneously creating micro-channels to allow deeper skin penetration. This helps topical applications be absorbed better and increased collagen formation in the skin.

This technique is not all that new but was only recently introduced in this country. Skin needling to create new collagen has been practiced in Europe for the past two decades. What’s new is the new automated system for performing the technique.

CIT or Collagen Induction Therapy was invented by a Swiss-French dermatologist named Dr. Phillippe Simonin and is the official name of the micro-needling technique. He found that the needling technique used for tattooing actually improved the appearance of scars.

It improves the texture, tone, and color of the skin while reducing fine lines. The process is easy and requires little to no downtime.

Micro Needling is a safe, heat-free treatment that
is successfully used on all skin types and colors.

How is Micro-Needling Performed?

The device used is called a MicroPen and is a multi-needle device that holds 12 sterile needles and is battery operated. The needles are used to pierce the skin in the area to be treated at different depths to encourage the growth of collagen and elastin, two essential proteins for smooth, firm, young-looking skin.

Treatments typically take between 10 and 15 minutes because the pen moves quickly across the skin making microscopic holes. Different depths are used for different purposes.
● Needles entering shallow depths allow better product penetration and smooth out fine lines.
● Deeper depths create the collagen response and activate the healing process such as with acne scars.

What is Micro-Needling Good for Treating?

  • The appearance of fine lines and wrinkles
  • Thickened, sluggish, or dull skin
  • Acne and trauma scars
Is it a Painful Process?

It is normally not painful but could get a bit uncomfortable with the depths needed for scar treatment. This is easily treated with a topical application of numbing gel applied to the skin prior to treatment. The feeling is often described like sandpaper being rubbed across the skin.

How Long Does it Take to See Results?

It often depends on the area being treated. You might only require two treatments while someone else may need up to five treatments. Good results can typically be seen within a week after treatment. You may need several treatments to achieve the results you want. You should begin to see improvement in skin tone the first week though. Patients receiving acne scar treatment with a laser may need 6 to 8 treatments.

The MicroPen induced process also simultaneously creates micro-channels which allow for deeper skin penetration of select topical skincare products.

What Can I Expect After Treatment?

• Treatment at Shallow Levels:

Your skin may feel a little warm to the touch and sensitive for a day or two after treatment.

• Treatment at Deeper Levels:

When treating at deeper levels you may have some swelling, bruising, and little pinpoints of blood. Your skin may also feel tight for a time. You should stay out of the sun after treatment because your skin will be more sensitive to the heat. Avoid using any products on the skin that may cause irritation. You may feel as though your skin is covered in tiny grains of sand but do not attempt to pick them off. This is a normal part of the process and it will heal itself.

What is the Benefit of Micro-Needling Over Laser Treatments?Laser treatments involve heat for fractional resurfacing. Some people prefer a non-heat inducing treatment due to highly-pigmented skin. Micro-needling is a great alternative. Another benefit is that the cost is lower than traditional laser treatments.

Interesting Back Story On Micro Needling

Micro Needling (also called Natural Collagen Induction Therapy) was pioneered by a Swiss-French dermatologist called Dr Phillippe Simonin. He found that facelift patients who had undergone camouflage tattooing after surgery to hide scars showed substantial improvement in how their scars looked. Further investigation proved the relationship between the tattoo process using needles and scar improvement.
